Where are these documents stored on the computer? What is the path to the files? From where did these files come? Select one of these files. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window.
From the back up, when I try to open the files I require, I get 'Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges' for word documents and 'Excel cannot access 'file name'. The document may be read only or encrypted. I have not encrypted the files, and I am the administrator for the computer. Sep 25, 2013 - I have checked all the permissions and the owner and they are as they. I get a 'Word cannot open the document: user does not have access.
At the bottom is a panel labeled Sharing & Permissions. Use COMMAND-SHIFT-4 and the crosshairs to select the area of the panel and place a snapshot of it on your Desktop.
Then post the image here using the camera icon in the toolbar of the message composition window. It will look something like this: Your permissions will not be the same as above. Go to Library on menu bar, hold and release Option key and notice how the entry for 'Library' gets added to the menu list. One way to get there, now that Apple had decided that we needed to be refrained from making changes or accidents or as if only needed for troubleshooting and otherwise make the folder hidden.
/Users/your-account/Library PS: the forums use to encourage and make user profile of their Mac, OS version, other details - be presesnt and show which hurts us, we and readers really need to know. In fact, for me, I just noticed that even my posts - everyone's really - have had the user products profile hardware etc gone, removed, not showing on posts.
That may help the servers and the problems with the forum functioning but it does hinder me. People here can be running 10.6.8 or Lion (10.7.5) or 10.8.x (Mountain Lion) and a few are still using older (and now unsupported) version of OS X. Hi, I am unable to open any image files on an external back up drive. I am getting the same message about not having sufficient privileges to open these files despite having set the permissions for the entire disk, the specific folder and the individual.jpgs to Read & Write.
I am able to open.mp4 files on this same drive without incident. I am able to open the original images on the primary external drive. When I trashed and deleted one folder of unopenable images on the backup drive and replaced it with a direct copy from the primary drive, I was given the same message that I lacked the privileges to open the items. I tried the suggestion above with trashing the Preview Cache, Container and Preferences files.
I did not have a Saved State file to trash. This did not work nor change the message I get when I try to open the image files. How can I resolve this problem? A backup drive isn't much use if half the items on it are inaccessible. If it matters, the computer is a Late 2012 Mac Mini Server with two 250GB SSDs running 10.8.5 and the primary and backup drives are both Western Digital 4TB USB 3.0 MyBooks.
Thanks Linc Davis, My problem was that Preview wouldn't open SOME image files in a folder. The rest worked fine. This happened shortly after I upgraded to Mavericks. The permissions were fine (I even changed them to test this but that didn't help) Following your advice I discovered that I had 2 lockfiles in Preferences. Com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist.lockfile com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist.lockfile I deleted these 2 files (and only these) and the problem cleared up. I never would have thought to look in Preferences without your advice.
